German WW II Flak 20mm Ammo Set

Kit #: JKT72010 Preview by Rob Haelterman

This set contains

  • 96 empty shells.
  • 8 curved magazines, typical for the Flak 30/38. Each magazine could hold 20 rounds. (Note that the KwK30/38 used a much shorter magazine.)
  • 10 metal ammo boxes, of which two are hollow with a separate lid. Each of these could hold two of the curved magazines.
  • 8 wooden ammo crates, of which two are hollow with a separate lid. These contained 100 rounds, wrapped in a cardboard tube.
  • 2 loads of 20mm shells for these wooden crates. (These are also included in set 72009, which contains 3 loads.)

According to Wikipedia these rounds were used on the following guns during WW2:

  • German FlaK 30, FlaK 38, KwK 30, KwK 38 or MG C/30L
  • Swiss Solothurn S-18/1000 or S-18/1100 anti-tank rifle
  • Italian: Cannone-Mitragliera da 20/65 modello 35 (Breda) or Cannone-Mitragliera da 20/77 (Scotti)
  • Finnish L-39 anti-tank rifle or Lahti L-40 anti-aircraft gun
  • Polish Nkm wz.38 FK

Representing the 20×138mmB cartridge, my measurements give a diameter of 0.39mm (28 scale mm) and a length of 2.36mm (170 scale mm). Given the extreme dimensions we are working with here, the aberration is tolerable. It also means that it would be a good choice to represent empty shells for the MK103 aircraft cannon, which at the end of the war was also used (or at least projected to be used) as a Flak gun and was installed in the Kügelblitz. They are the tiniest shells that I have seen so far in any medium.

For the magazines, boxes and crates, I found a useful comparison on the Perth Military Modeling Site and on Wehrmachts-Kisten (thanks to Patrick Mondria):

  • Magzines:
    • height at the tallest point: 345mm (= 4.8mm in 1/72). The resin items are 5.9mm.
    • width: 210mm (= 2.9mm in 1/72). The resin items are 3.2mm.
  • Metal ammo boxes:
    • height/height to lid join: 380mm/315mm (= 5.3/4.4mm in 1/72). The resin items are 6.6/4.7mm.
    • width: 260mm (= 3.6mm in 1/72). The resin items are 4.3mm.
    • depth: 130mm (= 1.8mm in 1/72). The resin items are 2.3mm.
  • Wooden ammo boxes:
    • height/height to lid join: 200mm (= 2.8mm in 1/72). The resin items are 3.1mm.
    • width: 670mm (= 9.3mm in 1/72). The resin items are 10.8mm.
    • depth: 260mm (= 3.6mm in 1/72). The resin items are 3.6mm.

Irrespective of the measurements, which show that the parts are consistently overscale all items look very realistic and have a very high diorama potential.
The parts are flawlessly cast in dark grey, and the hollow boxes have extremely thin walls.

Note that parts of this set were previously released by Tracks and Troops. The items cast by JK Resin for T&T are gradually being taken back into the new JK resin range.
