Sd.Kfz.251/21 "Drilling"
Kit # 2015 Preview by Rob Haelterman

This is a relatively simple conversion set for a relatively simple conversion of the ubiquitous Sd.Kfz.251 half track. While the box nor the instructions mention it, the conversion is meant for the Ausf.D variant of the Sd.Kfz.251. However, the painting instruction clearly shows this variant and as the set is meant for the Hasegawa kit (Ausf.D only) the attentive modeler will have figured this out already. Nevertheless, photographic evidence shows at least one prototype based on the Ausf.C variant.

The set comprises 8 resin parts and a fret of PE that will be used for the Drilling mount (pedestal, ammo boxes, guns and barrels,..), the raised armor for the superstructure (all PE) and some parts to improve the Hasegawa kit:
- front panel for the radio
- rear doors with opening mechanism
- rear licence plates
- lifting hooks and small items

All resin parts are mouded in crisp tan resin and the steel-colored PE set looks top notch too. All parts come in a cardboard-cum-plastic blister.

The manual is very clear and shows the limited number of modifications that need to be applied to the base kit, as well as the assembly for the Drilling mount. A camo & marking suggestion is also given, as are painting instructions for the subassemblies. No decals are provided.

Even though this set is meant for the Hasegawa kit, it is more than likely that the Drilling mount will adapt itself to the newer Dragon kits of the Sd.Kfz.251. The rear doors and other small items might be another matter. I might just try it when I come to using this set.
Also note that the MG151 Drilling mount was a versatile piece of equipment and was also used on other vehicles, widening the scope of this set.

Post scriptum:
I in 2015 CMK released a "stand-alone" Drilling that has nothing in common with this set and is actually lightyears ahead of this set.
